For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer.
The Lord who gives us everything we need for life and godliness also provides “everything for us to enjoy”(1 Tim 6:17). Our Lord is not a slave driver who exacts everything from his subjects and gives nothing in return. He is however an extravagant giver who inspires his people with unmatched kindness. Our Lord is not a Gnostic God who demands his followers reject the material world. On the contrary, our God is creator and our God is good, imparting an inherent good in all that he has made. Coupled with these, we have a loving Father who delights in giving good things to his children. In my brief experience as a father, I can attest to this reality. Few things bring greater joy to my heart than to watch my one year old son experience joy from what I give him. I can imagine it will be all the sweeter when he can actually express his gratitude verbally. I can also imagine the heartbreak I would feel if he became too fixated on the gift, making it a source of enslavement or cause to forget the giver. I would want my gifts to draw him near and inspire him to share his joy with others. May the God and Father of all riches inspire you to share everything through the glorious riches given to you in Christ.
