[ They Had Everything in Common ] Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common.
At Pentecost Jesus came to live in His people by the Holy Spirit. Believers in Christ were born again, new creations in union with Jesus. Through our union with Christ, everything that belongs to Christ is now ours: His death, resurrection, victory over sin, beloved family status, inheritance, righteousness and more. This includes also His body, His church. We’re united in Christ’s body with all His people. Just as a vine shares everything with the branches; and just as the different parts of our body share everything in common with other parts – DNA, nutrients, blood supply and so on, so too in the body of Christ. To live out our union with Jesus in gospel community can only look one way: to share everything in common – not just our possessions, but also our joys, burdens, sorrows, unity of mind and purpose, our hearts and lives. Make this true of us, Lord Jesus!
