[Post Conference Devo] Hebrews 11:13-16

Hebrews 11:13-16

These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. 14 For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. 15 If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.

The Christian life is a life of faith – from beginning to end.  As those who have been born of God (John 1:12), redeemed by Christ (Gal 3:13) and called out as his people (1 Pet 2:9) – we are now pilgrims, aliens and strangers in this world as we journey through life to our heavenly home.  If we are to be happy, holy and fruitful in this life we must daily acknowledge this reality in everything we do.  We must not place our hope for joy and significance here, but must constantly cultivate a longing for a “better country” – setting our hearts on things above where Christ is seated, reigning at the right hand of God (Col 3:1-4).  We will not receive the fulfillment of the promises here – but by faith, we welcome them from a distance.  It is only as we view every decision through this lens that we will voluntarily embrace suffering to live for Christ and lay down our lives for others.  And when we see our Lord face to face – he will not be ashamed to be called our God, but will have a city prepared for us.   “Only one life ‘twill soon be past, only what’s done for Christ will last” – CT Studd.
